Northwestern’s John Evans Professor of Neuroscience Emeritus Peter Dallos was recently recognized for his impact on the study of Outer Hair Cells (OHC), one of the two types of sensory receptors of the cochlea, in the introduction to a special issue of Hearing Research. Dallos is featured prominently by the editors of the issue, crediting him with leading the international research effort to dissect out physiological roles for inner and outer hair cells of Corti's organ. They christen OHCs as the “cells of Dallos,” They also share several of Dallos's publications as part of a compilation of articles that reconsider the OHC's role in cochlear amplification, as well as the cell's basic physiology.
