Gallio Lab Finds Snow Flies Generate Their Own Body Heat

The Gallio Lab's recent remarkable discovery expands our knowledge of the incredible adaptability of insects.  Snow flies (Chionea alexandriana), a type of crane fly adapted to live in freezing, snowy conditions, were found not only to produce an antifreeze-like substance to keep themselves alive in wintry conditions, but also to produce their own body heat, likely through mitochondrial processes.  Read the Northwestern Now press release here, the full article by Northwestern Now's Amanda Morris here, and the paper itself on Cell's website, here!
