Xu Liu's Research on Manipulating Memory Selected Runner-Up for Science Breakthrough of the Year

AAAS' Science magazine published their annual Breakthrough of the Year issue for 2014 including a list of runners-up. As such, Xu Liu's research was recognized as a significant scientific achievement. Liu's work on memory manipulation was chosen due tobreakthrough techniques of utilizing lasers to create artificial memories, such as a fear response, in mice - a literal form of inception. As Science author Underwood states: "One thing is certain, however: Once considered beyond scientific dissection, memory is finally starting to yield its secrets."

Professor Xu Liu is set to join the department faculty at Northwestern in late January 2015.
